Seva Samajam Boys Home Industrial School

Seva Samajam Boys Home Industrial School

  Established: 1956

The Seva Samajam Boys Home is one of the initial projects of the Guild of Service. It was started as a destitute home and vocational training school to assist and provide employment to needy boys. It pioneered  structured vocational training to school dropouts more than half a century ago, when such courses were unheard of.

GOS Seva Samajam Boys Home Industrial School today offers trade courses recognized by the Department of Employment and Training, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. Candidates who complete the course, are well trained and have a certification from the Govt. Dept which ensures that they get jobs immediately.  SSBH also provides students with entrepreneurial skills in case they want to be successfully self-employed. On an average the number of pass outs annually for the different courses is between 20-35 candidates. The courses conducted at the School are:

  • Refrigeration and air conditioning repair
  • Electrical repair
  • Automobile repair
  • Cutting and tailoring

Guest lectures by experts in the trades from the concerned industries are organised to enable the trainees to understand the role they need to play when they join employment. Non-formal courses and Summer courses are also offered to needy trainees.

SSBH helps in placement for In-plant training in reputed companies. Most cutting and tailoring trade trainees opt for self-employment and SSBH extends guidance for obtaining a loan to buy a sewing machine. On successful completion of their training, the candidates are offered campus placements with top companies like TVS, Enfield, Maruti, Hyundai, Daikin, Voltas, Samsung and LG. Candidates completing the Tailoring course are assisted with securing a loan for sewing machines so that they can become self-reliant. SSBH also conducts short courses in sewing and tailoring for women which is sponsored by Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board. Over 200 women candidates have undergone these short term courses which were sponsored by Government agencies like Corporation of Chennai, Slum Clearance Board, and Corporation for Development of Women.

GOS – SSBH Sports Academy

GOS-SSBH Sports Academy was started to provide a training ground for sportspeople in the Saligramam area. The programme is running successfully and qualified trainers train athletes and footballers, using human performance programs designed to help athletes and footballers to reach their full potential.  The Academy enlists diverse experts to support youth, amateur and elite athletes with a full-circle approach that includes body, performance and cognitive training.

Veeramuthu alias Williams came from a poor family and due to financial problems couldn’t continue with his schooling. When he was 14 years old, he joined a tailoring shop as a helper to support his family for a daily wage of Rs. 2. Soon, he came to know that the Seva Samajam Boys Home was providing free training and decided to join it.

Williams says that “on completion of the Course we were not left to fend for ourselves. We were helped with placement. I joined a tailoring centre and opened a bank account and started saving. Presently I am working as a Production Manager in a private company and earn over Rs. 30,000 a month, a far cry from the daily wage of Rs. 2. I have bought a house and am living happily with my family.”

I am grateful to the Guild of Service and my teacher - Mr. Thirunavukarasu for transforming a poor boy into a successful manager of a company. “I believe instead of providing a meal for a day, if we offer good professional training to a person, we will change the person’s life forever. I am the best example of this.”

Lakshmi Kanth grew up in an economically weak family. His family situation was such that he was forced to drop out of school and work as a daily wage labourer to support them. He had no hope and dreams of bettering his life. He chanced to hear about GOS SSBH which offers technical courses and is open for school dropouts too.

He joined the Automobile technician course. His interest in the subject and zeal for learning was immense. He passed out of SSBH and is today working with Yamaha Motors with good pay.

A.Gokul Raj, was completely clueless of what to do with his life. Both his parents were daily wage labourers and he had no one to guide him. He joined the Electrical technician course at GOS-SSBH.

Today he is working as the Lead Electrician with TVS.  He and his parents are very happy that he is well placed, financially independent and secure.

Surendar.R was always interested in automobiles. He wanted to be an entrepreneur and start his automobile repair shop. He joined the auto mechanics training programme at SSBH to gain proper knowledge of the trade. He was very happy that apart from that they also guided him on entrepreneurship. After completion of the programme, he fulfilled his dream and now is a proud entrepreneur of a automobile repair shop.
