MCJ Special School for the Hearing Impaired was started to provide quality education for hearing impaired children from the economically weaker sections. Four out of every 1000 children suffer from severe to profound hearing loss. These children need special teaching, training and communication skills for a better future and this is where MCJ Special School for Hearing Impaired makes a big difference.
The school has classes from LKG to Class 12. We have trained special educators and an audiologist cum speech therapist. All children undergo computer training and are computer literate. There are 11 functional smart classrooms and all the textbooks have been uploaded in their digital form. The smart classrooms ensure that the children learn visually. The medium of instruction has been Tamil since inception. We plan to introduce English as a medium of instruction next year.
We empower the students by fostering their skills and by providing vocational training from Class 6 to make them self-reliant adults. Tailoring is one of the courses offered and the students take the Tamil Nadu Government Technical Examination. Tally certificate course is conducted for senior students so that they are employable on passing out of school.
The School has helped many bright and deserving students continue their higher education in college by arranging to pay their fees through donors and sponsors. Some have gone on to become engineers and are today employed in top firms. Coming from very poor families and with an impairment to boot, this was beyond their imagination. The School provides hearing aids to all the children. They are also provided with nutritious lunch on all school days.
